Climate Folk – Dance of the Carbon Cycles
Sounds for Sustainability
(Dublin, 6th and 7th June 2025)
Roots in Tune is proud to announce the Climate Folk – Dance of the Carbon Cycles as part of The Invites program, and in collaboration with SHIFT-COST.eu.
Climate Folk - Dance of the Carbon Cycles is a newly commissioned interactive artistic work created by scientists from Trinity College Dublin and folk musicians. The dance has the form of three interlinked traditional folk dances representing the inorganic (slow) carbon cycle, the fast carbon cycle formed of organic matter and gaseous carbon (carbon dioxide and methane) and the water cycle that plays a key role in the movement of carbon around the plant and between the cycles. Each dance will have its own melody (either instrumental and/or choral) but all three will work in harmony together and show how these cycles interweave together on the planet. The activity integrates scientific knowledge, artistic expression, and embodied learning, making it a powerful tool for education and engagement.
The world premiere of the Climate Folk – Dance of the Carbon Cycles will take place in Dublin on Saturday 7th June from 12pm. The day will be spent learning the dances and music before the inaugural dance is performed. Intrigued?! We welcome everyone to come along and participate, ether as a dancer (no previous experience required) or musician (any acoustic instrument).
If you would like to participate in the Dance of the Carbon Cycles on Saturday 7th June, either as a musician or dancer, please complete the form below to register your interest.
Additionally / alternatively, the Dance of the Carbon Cycles forms part of a larger initiative called Sounds for Sustainability within SHIFT-COST.eu, an EU COST action with the aim to raise awareness to Climate Change and sustainability through the Arts & Social Sciences and Humanities. The Sounds for Sustainability meeting in Dublin on Friday 6th June will be an interdisciplinary gathering aimed at exploring the role of sound, music, dance, and acoustics in environmental awareness, conservation, and climate action. This will include diverse contributions such as scientific research, artistic performances, case studies, and participatory workshops.
If you would like to present your own work as part of the Sounds for Sustainability gathering and / or need a travel grant to participate in the Dance of the Climate Cycles, please apply via the SHIFT-COST.eu website at this link: https://shift-cost.eu/sounds-for-sustainability-climate-folk-dance-of-the-carbon-cycles/
